1985 WB pressing. Nice copy. VG/VG+ vinyl and cover. Creases on cover. A few light surface scuffs/scratches on vinyl. Too light to affect play. Great album.

Description

Vinyl LP pressing of this 1985 album from the British Rock band led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler. When their self-titled debut album was released in 1978, the band garnered plenty of attention but it took another seven years before BROTHERS IN ARMS turned them into global superstars. After one more studio album, the band split up but they left behind a lasting legacy that continues to be embraced by new fans and new generations every year.

For the record, I WAS not a big a Dire Straits fan until I listened to the 20th Anniversary Edition SACD that was released in 2005. Every time I did a Google search on the Top Ten 5.1 Multi channel SACD, Pink Floyd''s The Dark Side of the Moon was always number 1 and Dire Straits''s Brothers in Arms was either number 4 or 5. As I stated, I was not a big fan of Dire Strait, so I bypassed this SACD every time.......BIG MISTAKE!! According to other reviewers, this SACD is rated between 1 to 5 stars. I must have received a different version because the 2005 20th Anniversary Edition Multi Channel SACD will now be my show case SACD, because the clarity of the sound is amazing!. This SACD is just AWESOME. Every instrument is clearly defined and is being played on a separate speaker. If you have a SACD 5.1 Multi Channel system, I now recommend this SACD as your very first SACD! My 20th Anniversary Edition SACD was released by Mercury Records on July 26, 2005 and it is a Hybrid SACD that contains the original 2 channel Stereo CD, the 2 Channel Stereo SACD and the 5.1 Multi Channel SACD. I can not vouch for the sound quality of the 2 Channel Stereo CD or the 2 channel Stereo SACD. The 5.1 sound quality is the best i have heard and I have over 25 5.1 SACDs.

(This review is about the double vinyl, 180 gram version.)

What a fabulous pressing of an excellent album. The original was one of my most-played albums of the 80''s, so much so that it is worn to a nub. Now that I''m back into vinyl, I knew it was one of the first I was going to re-add to my collection. It sounds so fantastic. Yes, it''s a pain the arse to get up after two songs to flip the record, I''ll admit that right up front. But the sound quality makes it well worth it. They really did a great job.

This album is more than just "Money For Nothing" and "Walk of Life" btw. They''re the headliners and are unforgettable songs, but this record goes deeper than just the radio friendly tunes. The title track may be one of the most underrated songs in the Dire Straits catalog. (Though after its inclusion during a powerful scene of "The West Wing" in the late 90''s, that might not be true anymore.) So glad to have my "Brothers" back.

Walk of Life was a little disappointing, seems like a little too much compression was used on this song. I ran the 270 Kbps MP3 from Amazon through the Dynamic Range Database program and only got a 9, the MP3 I have from the original CD at only 128 Kbps is 13. I have heard recordings of this song where it gets noticeably louder when it kicks in at the :35 mark, on this pressing however it is the same level. From what I''m hearing this vinyl is from the same (re)master as the SACD, so it would appear this song has somewhat suffered from the loudness wars. Money for Nothing sounds great through, as does So Far Away, but the vocals seem somewhat compressed, something just about every studio seems to be doing now.

Please note that some people think this plays at 45, it doesn''t, it is at 33, it is just thicker records with more spacing, two songs per side, but the plus is you get a little more of the songs that were omitted due to space on the original pressing. Overall not bad, but I think it could have been better.

The music on the album is at this point, classic, but with today''s MANY pressing of the same albums by different companies, engineers etc. sound quality varies like crazy.
This is the 20th Anniversary SACD version. It came out in 2005. It''s good but not as good as the original red book CD that came out in 1985. That one is BY FAR the best.
Don''t pay extra for the MoFi (Mobile Fidelity) version.
I remember the old days when Mobile Fidelity first came out. It was founded by Brad Miller. He was a genius and Mofi recordings were the best in my opinion. Then, he passed away in 1998. The company then went bankrupt in 1999. Then the company was acquired by Music Direct. Nothing to do with Brad Miller or the original company. MoFi now, is a totally different company. They even sell audio equipment. Not saying they are bad, but they are NOTHING like the original Mobile Fidelity company. Never get hooked on brand loyalty. Companies buy and sell brand names every day.
SO, don''t be fooled by this 20th Anniversary Edition SACD being such a great sounding CD just because it is an SACD. It''s good. But, if you can get your hands on the original redbook CD from 1985, go with that one. I bought that one when it first came out. Fortunately, I still have it.

Got this yesterday & I''m happy to report this is the "180 GRAM High-Performance 2-Disc Vinyl Record, Half-Speed Mastered by Stan Ricker, Plating & Pressing at R.T.I. version ($30.29 as of this posting). As you might or might not know, this version has the complete, un-altered full length versions of all songs. On the original album songs were trimmed to fit on 2-sides.
Haven''t had a chance to do a full listen comparison to my 1st press of the album but I''m liking what I''m hearing! :)

180 Gram Virgin Vinyl - 093624937715

Half Speed Mastering by Stan Ricker - Limited Edition - Pressed at Plated at RTI

WOW!!! The sound was excellent, deep bass, great depth of soundstage, smooth rich tone and great dynamics! There is a reason they cut this Album on four full sides!"

Whatever you think of Knopler’s songwriting depth and the communicativeness of his delivery, there’s no denying the exquisite—though now sounding dated— mid-1980’s production quality. The sound quality of this album immediately attracted audiophiles back then and continues to do so today.

Even on his worst day, I wouldn’t bet against Bob Ludwig cutting at the Masterdisk lathe and the “RL MASTERDISK” original is still a potent sounding record. Stan Ricker’s half-speed cut, spread out over four sides, doesn’t attempt to re-create the original’s brash, forward and echoey sound. It’s somewhat drier, less “tinkly” and definitely gives musical images greater weight and more body. For instance, “Walk of Life” comes off far less “carnival-like” and I think that makes it a much better song. Ricker gives the album a warmer, more mature feel, with the half-speed mastering trading some brashness and edginess for greater true transient detail and a more burnished overall presentation.

. Dire Straits'' biggest-selling album-in fact, one of the biggest-selling albums world-wide of all time-Brothers In Arms helped musically define a decade. This superb album spent the grand total of 203 weeks in the UK charts and a respectable 55 weeks in the US charts (where it sold 7 million copies alone).

"Brothers In Arms" was pretty much the success story of the 80''s and was primarily fuelled by a slate of huge hit singles like the classic "Money For Nothing" (No.1 US, No.4 UK ''85), "Walk Of Life" (No.2 UK ''86, No.7 US ''85) and "So Far Away" (No.19 US ''86, No.20 UK ''85). "Money For Nothing," the song that helped immortalize the phrase “I want my MTV,” hit #1 and won the Grammy® for Best Rock Performance.

Today, Brothers In Arms remains a rock essential - and now is offered as a completely uncompressed two-disc vinyl album for the ultimate in fidelity!

The instruments are sharper and the whole soundstage is much more full than the studio pressing. It also seems as if there is more music. I do not remember the extended lead in for the first song on side two ("Walk Of Life") as well as the trailing notes for the last song on side 3 ("Ride Across The River"). I''m not a big fan of bloated bass, and even though the bass is considerably more full than the studio pressing, it was also more musical.

1/2 Speed Mastered by Stan Ricker on High Performance 180 Gram Vinyl... Because Sound Matters! Plating and Pressing at R.T.I. Dire Straits''

I would give this CD a rating of thousand stars. And I am not being hyperbolic. The depth and breadth of the song-writing are astonishing, ranging from heartfelt longings in So Far Away, to satirical meta observations in Money for Nothing, to sweet and wistful hopefulness in Why Worry, to character study worthy of a New Yorker short story in The Man’s Too Strong. Such insightful and original lyrics are combined with absolutely amazing musical arrangements. And the band is overflowing with embarrassing riches of talent. Not only can the boy play, they can all play! And they sound even better live! Of course the sine qua non of this alchemy (if I can borrow from their earlier titular work) is Mark Knopfler. Stars aligned and Mark Knopfler found his métier. It is difficult to grasp just how talented Mark Knopfler truly is without seeing his preternatural guitar playing/picking from the videos that so many fans have so thoughtfully posted on YouTube and from viewing the Alchemy blu-ray. And of course, our raison d''etre of viewing countless hours of these videos is to catch glimpses of MK’s fingers and right thumb. When I first heard these songs, I was not surprised that they were from about 30 years ago. They sound fresh, relevant and immediate here and now today, and this is what distinguishes art from fads and poseurs. To crib Keats, this music is a joy forever; its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness; but still will keep.

If you grew up in the 80''s when MTV began, you remember that haunting chorus from ''Money for Nothing'' with Sting echoing "I want my MTVeeeee" punctuated by machine gun percussion and Mark Knopfler''s masterful guitar grunge riff. The entire album is a masterpiece, from the easy languid ''So Far Away'' to the bouncy rockabilly ''Walk of Life'' this album delivers. Even the graceful lullaby ''Why Worry'' demonstrates a simple song writing genius. Knopfler''s scratchy heartfelt vocals float above a guitar mastery that ranges from grinding riffs to the mournful wails from ''Brothers in Arms.'' I envy those who discover this brilliant album for the first time. Highly Recommended!

Item returned. This is a double album. One of the discs is poorly pressed being splattered with crackles and pops and inter track surface noise. The other disc is fine but has the labels on both sides positioned way off centre, not a deal breaker but just reinforces the lack of quality control. Also this possibly does not need t be a double album, if it does then I personally would have preferred it if it had been pressed over 3 sides; so little music on each side it is irritating to have to get up 3 times to play the album. Lol the music of course is stunning.

I''ve been a fan of Dire Straits since I first heard Private Investigations from the Love Over Gold album playing on a CD at a High Fi show in Blackpool. That was when CD''s were all sparkly and new and this was my first encounter with the new format and Fire Straits. Back then people used to claim that you could still a hole in a CD and it would still play perfectly - yeh, right. I think the player was a Morantz which was a part of Phillips at the time. It was a smallish top loading contraption but sounded pretty good. Suffice to say I bought all of Dire Straits albums. Initially on vinyl but subsequently on CD and more recently on SACD. It''s great to be able to play this timeless music and now with all the clarity and panache that this 5.1 disc provides. I can''t say that there is a bad track on this album. Even now at the inflated prices that some SACD discs go for I think they are worth the money. Realistically, one has to ask is an album ever really worth £100? Given that this one is less than £11 its an absolute steal - and is perhaps what those over inflated ''rare'' SACD''s would cost, if only the medium had taken off. Listening to track 9 - the title track in glorious 5.1 is a joy to behold. Other tracks on the album are 1 so far away 2 money for nothing 3 walk of life 4 your latest trick 5 why worry 6 ride across the river 7 the man''s to strong 8 one world 9 brothers bin arms In short, a great album made even better by being in 5.1 on a SACD. If you like Dire Straits and you have the best to play the format, just buy it! At a touch under £11, you won''t regret your investment.

IMHO this isn’t actually their best album, for me Love Over Gold is the pinnacle, but my better half loves Bros in Arms so we had to get this, remastered, edition. But, what a remaster! The vinyl edition is jaw dropping A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! I can’t see the MOFI 45 rpm Audiophile Edition being significantly better at over twice the cost, as this is so good. Seriously if you like Dire Straits and you have a half decent turntable, this will sing, sing, sing (no pun intended) through your speakers.
